Fresh Access - Holcomb Farm CSA

Fresh Access is a name that is new this year for a program that has been an integral part of Holcomb Farm CSA since its inception in 1993. Part of the original – and ongoing – mission for the farm is to help supply fresh produce to those in Hartford and Granby who often have little access to healthy food at all.

While a portion of Fresh Access produce goes to emergency outlets through FoodShare and to the wider community through the Granby Community Kitchen, we partner with social service agencies to deliver the bulk of the Fresh Access produce to senior centers. These are places that seniors - many of whom have limited mobility - already visit on a regular basis and are already participating in a variety of other programs and services. The just picked, pesticide-free, vegetables become part of their weekly routine, just as it is for our members who come to the farm.

Over the years, we’ve supplied hundreds of thousands of pounds of produce through Fresh Access. We deliberately plan our crops to supply the senior centers with appropriate and nutritious selections. These crops require the same resources as those grown for the CSA shares. To fund the program, we depend on the generosity of our members, as well as donations from local organizations. CSA membership fees do not support this program.

The past two seasons, the program has suffered a setback with the elimination of an important government grant. This comes at a time when social benefits, and many benefits for seniors in particular, are being frozen or cut back, and demands on the emergency food system are at record highs. The need for local support is more urgent than ever.
