Trail Map

Our new trail map is ready!  You can click here to take a look and print out your own copy or you can stop in the front office and pick up a printed map.  Holcomb Farm offers 10 miles of trails on its property.  If you’re looking to go for a longer hike, the trails are also linked to the trail system of McLean’s Game Refuge, which covers 4,430 acres and to the Granby Land Trust’s Peterson Property with a gorgeous  view of Barn Door Hills and the Metacomet Ridge.

This trail map has been a work in progress for a few years and probably still would be only that without the direction of Holcomb Farm Board Secretary Marty Wilmot and the strong committee of board members who donated their time as well.

Many other people have contributed to the making of this trail map and we’d like to thank each of them for their support.  Firstly, we must thank Myron Stacks for his efforts to create the trails at the Farm in 1995.

Len Berton spent many hours collecting the GPS points and creating the first version of a computer generated map.  With the new map, Len and his friend Bruce Meredith, applied the first new color blazes on the trails.  This first step helped the public to better know the trails and to connect with the beautiful landscape at the Farm.

Many thanks to Larry Baril, the cartographer of the finalized map, who donated many hours and much expertise to the project.

We sincerely thank you all for your efforts to create this map.

Trail Rules

  • Hunting, trapping and sport shooting are not permitted.
  • Bicycles and motorized vehicles of any kind are not permitted on the trails.
  • Camping is allowed only by special permission.  Contact the Farm for details and reservations.
  • Fire is an ever present danger for the woodland areas.  Please do not smoke or build fires.
  • Any gates opened by visitors should be closed to prevent livestock wandering out of pastures and wildlife wandering into vegetable fields.
  • For everyone’s safety, dogs must be leashed and under control at all times.
  • Alcoholic beverages are not permitted.
  • Horseback riders must cede the right of way to pedestrians.
  • The trail bridges are not horse safe and should be avoided by riders.  Use water crossings for horses.  Use caution during heavy rains.
  • Minimal supervision is one of the charms of the Holcomb Farm trails.  We rely on your support for keeping the trails clean and safe.
  • Wildlife, flowers, shrubs, trees and rocks are precious natural resources.  Please do not pick or disturb them.
  • Please report any hazardous conditions to the Farm staff at 860.844.8616.

Parking

Refer to Parking symbols on the trail map. Signs will lead you to the west side trailhead. For east side trails, cross Simsbury Road and look for the gate.

All trails are a moderate distance.  To give you an idea of trail length, the distance from the gate at Day Street South around the blue loop on the east side and back to the gate is approximately 2 miles.

Trail Hours

The trails are open daily to the public from dawn to sunset, 365 days of the year.  Permission for large picnic groups or other special events should be obtained from the Holcomb Farm Learning Center staff.  They may be reached by telephone from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at 860.844.8616.
